SEO Explained (Without All the Flannel)

Remember the old Yellow Pages?

There was always one bloke who'd bought the biggest ad in the book.

Big logo.
Big headline.
Big phone number.

You couldn't miss him if you tried.

Did it mean he was the best?

Maybe.

Maybe not.

But he was the first one most people noticed.

Google's a bit like that.

Except instead of buying the biggest ad in the book...

You're trying to make sure people can actually find your business online.

The trouble is...

There's a whole industry built around making SEO sound like some sort of dark art.

Keywords.
Algorithms.
Domain authority.
Backlinks.
Technical optimisation.

By the time they've finished talking, you're wondering whether you need a website or a PhD.

Truth is...

SEO isn't nearly that complicated.

It's mostly about helping Google understand what your business does, and making it easy for customers to find you.

Let's leave the flannel behind and talk about what actually matters.

1. Google Needs to Know What You Do

Imagine driving past a shop with no sign out the front.

No windows.
No name.
No idea what's inside.

You'd probably keep driving.

Google's exactly the same.

If your website doesn't clearly explain who you are, what you do and where you do it...

Google's got a hard time recommending you.

2. Write for People First

Some websites try to impress Google.

They cram "Sydney plumber" into every second sentence until it reads like a robot wrote it.

Don't.

Write for real people.

If your customers understand it...

Google usually does too.

Funny how that works.

3. Speed Matters

We've all done it.

Clicked a website.

Waited.

Waited a bit longer.

Then hit the Back button.

Google notices that too.

A slow website isn't just frustrating.

It can cost you customers before they've even seen what you offer.

4. Fresh Content Helps

A website that's never updated is a bit like a shop with dust on the shelves.

It doesn't tell Google your business has closed...

But it doesn't exactly scream "we're busy" either.

Adding new articles, updating your services or refreshing your content every now and then tells Google you're still open for business.

5. SEO Isn't Magic

Here's the bit some people won't tell you.

SEO isn't a switch.

You don't flick it on Monday and wake up on Tuesday at the top of Google.

It takes time.

Good content.
A well-built website.
And a bit of patience.

Anyone promising instant results probably also reckons they can sell you a 1998 Commodore with only "one careful owner."

Stu's Tip

When someone tells you they can get your website to Number 1 on Google...

Ask them one question.

"Can you guarantee it?"

If they say yes...

I'd keep one hand on my wallet.

Final Thoughts

A good website and good SEO go hand in hand.

One helps people find you.

The other helps convince them to give you a call.

Neither works very well without the other.

So don't get caught up chasing every SEO buzzword under the sun.

Focus on building a website that's useful, easy to navigate and genuinely helps your customers.

Google tends to like those too.
